Knowing how each tested dog relates to others can make a big difference to research. Tell us which dogs are close relatives to your dog.
Remember that swab you sent to our research partner's lab? It contained complex information about your dog's DLA class genes. These genes inform the adaptability of your dog's immune system. And, this region of the genome is a notorious "hot spot" for meiotic recombination. That means that the haplotypes in this region are heavily scrambled (even more than most parts of the genome) with each generation, aiming to improve immune competence in the next generation. That's the positive side of this recombination but this also means that we can't be sure that the DLA haplotypes of the parents will remain intact in the offspring. We want to know more. Knowing which tested dogs are related to each other, especially close relatives, can really push forward this area of research.
